This week, Part 3 of a 4 Part Newsletter:
"Confessions of a Youth Group Drop Out Part III"
Even though there is great value, artistic merit, lessons to be learned and cultural relevance in films like “The Son” (grace, fatherhood, loss, redemption), or Kieslowski’s “Dekalog” (the Ten Commandments), “The New World” (true love, manifest destiny, culture wars), “Munich” (God’s chosen people, the cycle of violence) or “We Own The Night” (family, the price of revenge, passion) they can be more than the typical teen can grasp.
We created “36 Parables” to help begin pointing people to Jesus in an entertaining and easily understandable format. Training, if you will, for the longer format films I mentioned.
We are adapting 36 of Jesus’ parables into modern settings using the language of light, lens and quality filmmaking in narrative settings. Youth Pastors around the country use our three to seven-minute clips to initiate discussion of art and Christianity, thereby challenging their teens to dig deeper. In a perfect world a Youth Pastor would use the “36 Parables” films to train their teens’ intellects and then lay on the longer stuff, such as the “The Son.”
Recently we released "SermonParables," 60 to 90 second versions of the 9 films from "Yellow," "Purple" and "Cyan." The special "SermonParables" 2 DVD set includes a video DVD with all 9 short versions and a Data DVD (for computer use) with all 9 short versions in mpeg-1, .mov, .m4v, and .wmv format. The Data DVD also includes Bible studies for use with the films and "behind the scenes" photographs.
