Dear Friends,
Imagine that a friend tells you he has become a contractor. He has purchased all the right tools at Home Depot, has state of the art blue printing software on his computer, and even a level in his iPhone. All he lacks is experience. Would you hire him?
In recent years producing videos and movies has become much easier. With computer programs like Final Cut Pro running on a laptop along with any number of affordable cameras available at stores like Best Buy, practically anyone can purchase all the tools they need to be a video producer. It seems that every week I get a business card from some one else who is a self-proclaimed video producer, sound-man, shooter, editor or jack-of-all-trades. But spending money to make pretty pictures doesn’t make one a video producer. Producing not purchasing makes you a producer, a fact that many aspiring video producers haven’t figured out.
The same often holds true in our lives. We have the very best intentions, surround ourselves with the very best stuff, buy the right books, attend the right courses, read the right scripture passages out loud to our friends, and even say we’re planning to do the right things. These things don’t make us Christians. In the Parable of the Rich Young Ruler, Jesus tells the guy who has all “the right stuff” to sell his possessions and distribute the proceeds to the poor. "I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life." (Luke 18:29-30)
I challenge every builder, video producer and Christian to not spend another thin dime on the tools of your trade. Simply go out with your talent and do it. Start to do the things you have been reading about, praying about, or preparing for because education without application is simply entertainment. Start today.
